Welcome to The Treaty People

Launched: May, 2017

My goals for The Treaty People website are:

  1. Help non-Indigenous peoples learn and understand the real history of this place we call Canada.
  2. Be an ally to Indigenous peoples* and causes.
  3. Hold Canadians and our governments accountable to their promise of, and stated belief in, equality and fairness for everyone.

I am writing this from Guelph, Ontario. Guelph is situated on Treaty land, the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. I learned this in December 2016. I have lived in Guelph since 1989.

What you will read here are my thoughts and opinions based on my learnings to date. Use this link to read my posts. If you would like to be notified when there is a new post, you can follow The Treaty People at the bottom of the page.

*I am using the terms “Indigenous peoples” in my writing to refer to First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples. From what I have read and heard, I believe that “Indigenous” is the preferred term at present, replacing Aboriginal; though we must remember that we are talking about hundreds of distinct cultures with one, all-encompassing term. For the purposes of my writing, Indigenous peoples refers to the millions of human beings and their descendants that lived and live across North America, and in particular in the lands we call Canada, often referred to as Turtle Island by Indigenous peoples.
